Freddie King (September 3, 1934 – December 28, 1976) was an American blues guitarist and singer. He recorded several hits for Federal Records in the early 1960s. His soulful and powerful voice and distinctive guitar style inspired many musicians, particularly guitarists. The company treated King as an important artist, flying him to Chicago to the former Chess studios to record the album Getting Ready and providing a lineup of top session musicians, including Russell. Three albums were made during this period, including blues classics and new songs, such as "Goin' Down", written by Don Ni. .

Freddie King should be on the Mt Rushmore of Blues artists. Sure he is universally appreciated but in my opinion is sooo sooo sooo underrated it's not even funny. So incredibly talented. It would certainly be a fine starting point if you're just now getting into his music. Strong effort from top to bottom. More "pure" Freddie than the albums that followed (NOT that there is anything wrong with those!!).

Listen to Getting Ready. The first of Freddie King's three albums for Leon Russell's Shelter label set the tone for his work for the company: competent electric blues with a prominent rock/soul influence. King sings and plays well, but neither the sidemen nor the material challenge him to scale significant heights. Part of the problem is that King himself wrote none of the songs, which are divided between Chicago blues standards and material supplied by Leon Russell and Don Nix. The entire album is included on the compilation King of the Blues.

I'm going down I'm going, down, down, down Down, down Yes, I'm going down, yes I'm going down, down, down Down, down Yes, I've got my feet in the window Got my head on the ground.

Label: EMI Music Special Markets. Produced by Leon Russell, King's fantastic playing is backed here by varying degrees of rock and soul, resulting in an Eric Clapton record played by one of the greats of electric blues. For some, this is as good as blues can get. For others, it sounds kind of weird (the first song has a string section). Still, King's precise, stabbing leads are always worth hearing.
