Sorceress is the twelfth studio album by the Swedish progressive rock band Opeth. The album was released on 30 September 2016 via record label Nuclear Blast and the band's own imprint Moderbolaget. The album was produced and mixed by Tom Dalgety and recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales. Following the album's release, the band embarked on a world tour with bands the Sword, Sahg, and Myrkur as supporting acts. The album was streamed via SoundCloud on 29 September.

Sorceress is the second track and lead single from Opeth’s 2016 album of the same name. Chrysalis’ and ‘Sorceress 2’ follow on from this and only solidify the general adventuress of this album before ‘The Seventh Sojourn’ breaks out another instrumental song in the vein of other classic Opeth instrumentals.

Opeth is hardly a band that needs introduction. Their name has become synonymous with both quality and musical expansion, however the band have never stuck to the usual guidelines. Their twelfth album ‘Sorceress’ is about to hit the shelves at the end of September, and marks a third and definitive attempt in the metamorphosis of the band’s sound initiated with ‘Heritage’ and further developed with ‘Pale Communion’. Sorceress’ comes full circle with their foray into a drastically different musical territory, where straight ahead 1970’s-influenced prog-rock marries analog synth driven jazz-infused soundscapes sprinkled with psychedelic guitars and medieval-folk melodies.

In keeping with Opeth’s most recent output, Sorceress continues the band's exploration of new ideas and avenues within the prog/jazz sphere they’ve orbited ever since 2011’s Heritage. The varied elements that make up the 57 minutes of music on Sorceress showcase a band not willing to stand still or paint themselves into a corner, something that should come as no surprise to the bands large contingent of assorted fans

In the case of Opeth’s 12th album, Sorceress, the dazzling artwork perfectly illustrates what we can expect. Within this iridescent façade, a vicious, spiteful and deadly tone is sheltered beneath the magnificent peacock whose plumage serves as a reminder that Opeth continue to stay true to their own colours; which above all is purely progressive. On its most recent record, Sorceress, Opeth continues its predictable worship of progressive rock of the seventies which began with the weak Heritage (half a decade ago) and continued with the fairly average (by my prog standards) Pale Communion two years ago.
