And the elders and the deacons Tried to get the black sheep back into the fold The day I went from singing Rock of Ages To singing rock and roll. I packed a little bag And we began to travel all around the world Our nights were filled with music And screaming propositions from the girls. I started rolling cigarettes Drinking beer and loving warm red wine My momma wrote me letters I tied them all together Said I’ll read ‘em as soon as I get the time. Momma’s got a fever And daddy says she surely must be dying And momma’s one request the thing she loves the best Was to hear you sing the gospel one more time. And that’s when I went from singing rock and roll Back to singing Rock of Ages And the little country church Seemed a million miles from the concert stages.
