Bax: Symphony No. 5 &Russian Suite. The Bax Symphony N. is often called the "most characteristic" of his symphonies, and they are right in that it contains many of his characteristics as a composer in the period of his symphonies. It's all there: the chilly yet lushly scored orchestral textures, the slow section in the middle of the first movement's Allegro, the elegiac and moving slow movement, the sudden appearance and disappearance of musical vistas that seem almost random, and by now the required Epilogue, though in this case one which is glorious and triumphant rather than unsettled.
