In the 1970s, Johnson's name became synonymous with Hi Records in Memphis - "I Hear the Love Chimes" was immortalized in Quentin Tarantino's film Jackie Brown. But his story begins many years and labels before, in 1959 to be exact

A number of Syl Johnson's later ('76-77) tracks (all unissued in their time) provide highly enjoyable listens: "All I Need Is Someone Like You" is a charming duet with his wife Brenda; "Let's Start All Over Again" is a well-orchestrated mellow '70s soul ballad with a surprise solo blues guitar instrumental break by Johnson; while "Your Love Is.
Syl Johnson: Is it because I’m Black? I already posted this track, but that was a poor quality copy I ripped from vinyl. Here’s a box fresh version. Could I be falling in love - Syl Johnson. Young was ten years older than Magic Sam, was himself a killer guitarist (and singer), and he was one of those journeyman session players who just knew stuff. The first session he cut with Sam was in 1966, but they likely knew each other before then. Again, back to School Time : so here’s Joe Young in 1963 quoting Syl Johnson’s guitar part on the record.
