The Staatskapelle Berlin (German: ) is a German orchestra and the resident orchestra of the Berlin State Opera. Until the fall of the German Empire in 1918 the orchestra's name was "Königliche Kapelle", . The orchestra traces its roots to 1570, when Joachim II Hector, Elector of Brandenburg established the rules for an orchestra at his court which had been constituted, at an unknown date

Kyrill Kondrashin leads the Staatskapelle Dresden in a beautiful performance. Kondrashin had led the world premiere performance in Moscow on December 30, 1961. His 1966 performance is better - harder-edged and more intense. The great virtue of this recording is the lovely playing of the great Dresden orchestra. It is a fine alternative, but does not fully capture the work's power and terror. The world is not always beautiful, and music must sometimes reflect that reality. Although I love Shostakovich symphonies and Kondrashin's conducting of them, I cannot fathom the 4th symphony, even after repeated listenings. It still seems chaotic to me, especially the first movement. However, whether or not I understand this symphony, it is clear that Kondrashin did. Everything just sounds right - his tempos, use of rubato, rhythmic flow, changes in volume, etc.

Shostakovich 4 Kondrashin (SD)/front. Shostakovich 4 Kondrashin (SD)/Shostakovich - Symphony N. in C minor, o. 3 - Staatskapelle Dresden, Kyrill Kondrashin. Shostakovich 4 Kondrashin (SD)/Symphony N.
