The Banished Heart Lyrics and here you are To set a brand new path. To show me all that love means I didn’t know my way I’d given up hope but, here you are to set a brand new path To show me all that love means. When I hold you, I need you I said forever, and I mean forever. When I hold you, I need you I said forever, and I mean forever I didn’t know my way I’d given up hope but here you are to show me a new way I didn't know love until your name.
The Banished Heart is not an easy album. It certainly was not easy in its creation, as Cammie and Dobber both were coming out of a personal time of turmoil and darkness during the songwriting period, reflecting heavily on overall mood and direction of the whole affair. And as if that wasn’t enough already, Dobber’s house was completely destroyed by the subsequent floodings after Hurricane Harvey. Also ‘At Dawn’ shows that Oceans of Slumber have not abandoned their extreme metal roots to all but the occasional blast-beat. Changing from haunting slow-motion beauty to being steamrollered by drums and growls alike – and back again. But not necessarily staying in this pairing. Putting Cammie’s vocals once more on top of the extreme high speed drumming, only to pull the handbrake mid-flight to ultra slo-mo – a stroke of genius.

The Banished Heart is a contextual effort of musical beauty describing the figurative notion of being emotionally torn in two. Oceans Of Slumber move on from the misgivings of their previous records and pull off a heartfelt approach to their brand of progressive death/doom. Hailing from Texas (Houston), Oceans Of Slumber tell a tale through vivid songwriting, combining personal experience with a brand of music that doesn’t attain instant classification. In parts, Oceans Of Slumber’s 2018 release is not perfect. But it’s the album’s level of musical rawness that helps relate the music through the speakers into the listeners’ subconscious. It’s important that each element is allowed the time to shine both by itself and together, aided by Dobber’s slightly compressed production values. The album shines in its less is more approach.

Titled The Banished Heart, the new album is the follow up to 2016’s critically acclaimed debut full length Winter and is scheduled to be released in March next year. Speaking about the upcoming album, vocalist Cammie Gilbert says, guided by our resolve to only make music that is real to us, we explored a new depth and crawled deep inside ourselves to uncover what had been hiding and bring it out into the light. Sometimes in life, there are places where we are able to turn away, to get away with applying the utilities of denial, but not this time.
Musically, ‘The Banished Heart’ flourishes also. In playing and sound, performances warrant all plaudits. Fleeting Vigilance brings forth one of many impressive guitar performances from both Anthony Contreras and Sean Gary, while At Dawn will see lovers of the rhythm section drooling to find bassist Keegan Kelly, and drummer Dobber Beverley, blasting their respective instruments to their core. While the album does meander in places, as progressive sometimes does, and doesn’t always hit the mark, its meandering can also produce some equally interesting and surprising results. An album that commands your attention and compels you to listen, ‘The Banished Heart’ sees Oceans of Slumber producing what might already prove to be one the best Progressive Metal albums of 2018. What's your reaction? Hell Yeah!
