Queens of the Stone Age is the eponymous debut studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age, released by Loosegroove Records on October 6, 1998. It was primarily written and recorded in April 1998 by founding member Josh Homme and his former Kyuss bandmate Alfredo Hernández, with Hernández playing drums and Homme singing and playing the rest of the instruments. It features some of the final studio recordings by Kyuss while debuting guitarist Josh Homme's next project, Queens of the Stone Age. Five of the EP's six tracks had previously been released: Kyuss' cover version of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void" had been released as a single by Man's Ruin the prior year, with "Fatso Forgotso" as its B-side, while "Fatso Forgotso Phase II" had been released under the title "Flip the Phase" in 1995 on the single for "One Inch. If Only Everything" was re-recorded under the shortened title "If Only" for Queens of the Stone Age's debut album in 1998, while "Born to Hula" was re-recorded and appeared as a B-side on "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" single from the band's 2000 album Rated R. The Queens Of The Stone Age tracks are referred to as the "Gamma Ray Sessions" - corresponding to their moniker Gamma Ray (2), but the name was later changed (due to the famous metal band of the same name).
