A desert-rock origin story masquerading as Led Zep boogie machine, the opening track from Queens Of The Stone Age’s new Mark Ronson-produced album, Villains, offers the perfect introduction to the band’s carnivalesque insanity and, perhaps more importantly, the devilish impresario calling all the shots.

Songs for the Deaf is the third studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. It is considered a loose concept album as it takes the listener on a drive from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree. Each song comes from a different radio station along the way. Songs for the Deaf was QOTSA’s breakthrough album and garnered the band mainstream attention.

Songs for the Deaf is the 3rd studio album from Queens of the Stone Age, released on August 27, 2002. The album marks the transition from a looser sound in its predecessor, Rated R, and into a heavier, riff-driven rock. It is known for the singles Go With the Flow and No One Knows, two of the best-known songs from the band, and also from the feature of Dave Grohl on drums.

On Songs for the Deaf, core members bassist Nick Oliveri and singer-guitarist Josh Homme (also see Kyuss) balance pure guitar-induced carnage with more complex, though no less aggressive, speed rock that whips by so fast it creates its own breeze. Ironically, the first time I ever hear this album was on a warm afternoon, driving alone from San Diego to Temecula. But Songs for the Deaf is one of those cds that is just better than the samples indicate.

The sixth studio album from Queens of the Stone Age, Like Clockwork, is due for release in a few weeks. The sexier party rock of Eagles of Death Metal continued to make an appearance on Era Vulgaris (2007), and this was popular with readers as they chose Make It Wit Chu as one of the ten songs which Queens of the Stone Age newcomers should go to first.
