In 1951, Webb introduced a short-lived radio series, Pete Kelly's Blues, in an attempt to bring the music he loved to a broader audience. That show became the basis for a 1955 film of the same name. In 1959, a television version was made. Neither was very successful. Pete Kelly was a cornet player who supplemented his income from playing in a nightclub band by working as a private investigator. In 1963, Webb took over from William T. Orr as executive producer of the ABC/Warner Bros. detective series 77 Sunset Strip.

Pete Kelly's Blues is a 1955 musical-crime film based on the 1951 original radio series. It was directed by and starred Jack Webb in the title role of a bandleader and musician. Janet Leigh is featured as party girl Ivy Conrad, and Edmond O'Brien as a gangster who applies pressure to Kelly. Peggy Lee portrays alcoholic jazz singer Rose Hopkins (a performance for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role).

In 1927 Kansas City Pete Kelly and his jazz band play nightly at a speakeasy. A local gangster starts to move in on them and when their drummer is killed Kelly gives in, even though this also means taking the thug's alcoholic girl as a singer. Kelly soon realises he has made a big mistake selling out in this way and that rich girl Ivy is now the only decent thing in his life. Written by Jeremy Perkins {J-26}.

Jack Webb presents Pete Kelly's Big 7 featuring DICK CATHCART trumpet, ABE LINCOLN trombone, MATTY MATLOCK clarinet, JACK CHANEY saxophone, RAY SHERMAN piano, JUD DENAUT bass, GEORGE VAN EPS guitar & banjo, NICK FATOOL drums. Selections include OVER THERE, MANDY, THEY CAN'T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME, COLLEGIATE, SWEET ELOISE, O SOLE MIO, LA CUCARACHA, DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS, DIXIE, YOU CAME ALONG OUT OF NOWHERE, OLD PIGEON TOED JOAD & FIGHT ON (FOR OLD .

This is from the RCA Victor album "Pete Kelly's Big 7" recorded in the spring of 1955 as a "tie-in" with the movie. It was also heard at the end of the movie's "musical air trailer" NBC Radio broadcast on August 2, 1955 {Don Pardo, announcer}. You must be very proud of these beautiful recordings Ra. hey are as near perfection as makes any difference. As a swing/dixieland drummer with 40 years under my belt I still go into raptures over Mr Nick Fatool's peerless drumming
