Ray Davies of the Kinks, well respected as one of rock's best storytellers, makes his film-making debut as director, writer and composer of RETURN TO WATERLOO. This hour-long feature is a unique approach to the synthesis of music, video and cinema. Instead of dialogue, the story is told through music and lyrics.
Ray Davies wrote this nostalgic song about his older sisters, who loved to dance. The song describes how guys would take them out dancing, only to be frustrated at the end of the night when all they would get for their efforts (and money) was a kiss on the cheek. Davies had six older sisters (and one younger brother: his Kinks bandmate Dave). He says is was an abusive and unhappy marriage, and Rene would often return to the childhood home in Muswell Hill for visits. One of these visits took place in 1957 when Ray turned 13. For his birthday, Rene bought him his first guitar: a Spanish guitar he wanted. The song became a staple of Kinks live performances, and song Ray Davies really connected with. He said that of all the songs he's written "Come Dancing" is the lyrics he's most proud of. Clive Davis, the president of Arista Records, disagreed with Davies' choice of this as the album's single.
Ray Davies, leader of the group The Kinks and one of the most well-respected songwriters in the history of British rock, made his directorial debut with this film produced for British television. A man (played by Kenneth Colley) boards a commuter train and reads his newspaper, glancing at a story in which a man who looks just like him is wanted for a brutal rape. As the miles roll by, he wonders about the fate of his missing daughter (Dominique Barnes) and the sad state of his relationship with his wife (Valerie Holliman).
And, in fact, three of the songs had appeared on the last Kinks album, 1984's Word of Mouth. In any case, the billing didn't help sales much, and the film's limited distribution (which seems to have been limited to a TV showing or two and release on home video) didn't promote the soundtrack, either. The album failed to chart and went out of print the year after its release.
