Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash is the first studio album by the American punk rock band The Replacements. It was released on August 25, 1981 by Twin/Tone Records. The track "Somethin' to Dü" is a reference to the band Hüsker Dü, contemporaries of The Replacements and their Saint Paul counterparts. The track "Johnny's Gonna Die" is a reference to influential guitarist Johnny Thunders of the Heartbreakers and New York Dolls.
Their persona is so well defined: The Replacements were the working-class kids bursting with talent but always ready to squander it; the bratty wise guys with a sensitive streak who refused to play by the rules. But the group's persona has a distancing effect for those who are new to the band. There's never been a shortage of thirty and fortysomethings reminiscing about the 'Mats. Before these reissues, when someone would say that the band peaked with their first album, 1981's Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, I'd assume they were either: 1) a serial contrarian, 2) someone who finds punk rock to be music's greatest expression, or 3) crazy. Surely, the Replacements improved as they went. But now, returning to these records after so long, the "debut is best" take finally makes some sense.
With their third album, the New York crew set themselves on a course to becoming the most important noise band of the past three decades. Amp-torture clinics like "Starpower" and "Expressway to Yr Skull" explore what bassist Kim Gordon had called "the darkness shimmering beneath the shiny quilt of American pop culture. 29. The Replacements, ‘Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash’ (1981).
Johnny's Gonna Die" is pure inspiration, brilliant. The rest of the album is more or less boilerplate post-hardcore midwest punk, some, a cut above. Not bad if you're still into that sound, but even back in the day, I wanted to like it more than I actually liked it. This album is worth owning just for "Johnny's Gonna Die", and as an insight into where this band was headed. Reply Notify me 1 Helpful. Marketplace 0 29 For Sale.

Records subsidiary Sire Records signed The Replacements with their first major-label release being the Tim album, produced by Tommy Erdelyi, released in 1985. After the release of Tim, The Replacements fired Tommy's brother, Bob Stinson, as well as Jesperson the same year; the remaining Replacements carried on as a trio for Pleased to Meet Me, released in 1987, recorded in Memphis with producer Jim Dickinson. He was asked to take over the dormant music column at Esquire, which he began writing in June 1967. After Esquire discontinued the column, Christgau moved to The Village Voice in 1969, he worked as a college professor. From early on in his emergence as a critic, Christgau was conscious of his lack of formal knowledge of music.
