Erasure is the seventh studio album by Erasure, released in 1995. It was produced by Thomas Fehlmann (of The Orb) and Gareth Jones. An overtly experimental and introspective album, Erasure contains eleven, mostly mid-tempo tracks that differed from their past output of shiny, three-minute pop songs. Most tracks clocked in at five minutes or more, several contained long synth interludes, and guest artists included the London Community Gospel Choir and performance artist Diamanda Galás.

Erasure's third album, The Innocents, was released in April 1988. Preceded by the Top 10 single "Ship of Fools", the album hit number 1 in the UK on its initial release and returned to the summit a year later, eventually going double platinum. Memories of the Erasure album are also evident, with the Pretentious style middle-eight showing Vince may well not be over the appeal of surreal sounding audio. Loveboat is the richest and most diverse Erasure album in years. The album then slows for the uninspired Mad As We Are. Confused lyrical imagery and a bland musical accompaniment make this the weakest track on the album. Apparently an attempt to write a Phil Spector-esque style number, the only really interesting thing about this track is the way the volume gradually builds up as the song reaches it's conclusion.

Having continued course on I Say I Say I Say without adding much to its overall reputation, Erasure took a surprising turn on its self-titled album. With statements at the time indicating Clarke claimed inspiration from the complexity and reach of prog-rock keyboard experiments, the duo entered a less pop-friendly turn for this extensive record. Clarke definitely aims for a more spacy atmosphere throughout Erasure, assisted by sometime Orb compatriot Thomas Fehlmann.
