Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (sometimes called Bowie 1973) is a 1973 documentary and concert film by D. A. Pennebaker. It features David Bowie and his backing group The Spiders from Mars performing at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 3 July 1973. At this show, Bowie made the sudden surprise announcement that the show would be "the last show that we'll ever do", later understood to mean that he was retiring his Ziggy Stardust persona.

The other unnerving thing about this double-LP soundtrack of a concert taped in 1973 and finally released in 1982 is that there are bootlegs which have more to offer sonically. Another bootleg, David Bowie with the Spiders from Mars, London, July 3, 1973, is the exact same Ziggy performance, but it comes across better, much better. According to Pimm Jal de la Parra's book David Bowie: The Concert Tapes, the bootleg was issued from the ABC TV 1974 broadcast.
I bought the soundtrack of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars on vinyl in the 80s and loved it especially since by the time I saw Bowie it was for the Heroes tour (1978). David Live gave us a glimpse of the soul side of Bowie but what was missing was a live album from the Ziggy Stardust era. This album filled that need

Album · 1983 · 18 Songs. More than just a backup band, the Spiders had an amazing, frenetic musical chemistry with Bowie-especially on stage. Just listen to the kinetic drive they bring to a swaggering "Hang on to Yourself", their swelling, atmospheric background vocals on Time or their blistering, proto-punk intensity on The Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat" and you'll know just what we mean.
