The album title comes from the Brecht/Weill opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny), first performed in 1930 but banned by the Nazis three years later. The London production at Sadler’s Wells Opera in January 1963 was conducted by Colin Davis. The documentary was filmed at the same concert in 1973, where Bowie decided to retire the Ziggy Stardust persona. This album was also selected by the Library of Congress, for preservation in the National Recording Registry, in 2017. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Q&A.

Constructed as a loose concept album about an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, the story falls apart quickly, yet Bowie's fractured, paranoid lyrics are evocative of a decadent, decaying future, and the music echoes an apocalyptic, nuclear dread. Fleshing out the off-kilter metallic mix with fatter guitars, genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a cinematic flourish, Ziggy Stardust is a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, melodrama, and style and the logical culmination of glam. Mick Ronson plays with a maverick flair that invigorates rockers like "Suffragette.

Oh they were alright, the band was altogether Yes he was alright, and the song went on forever He was up all night Really quite out of sight He sang all night long Ziggy really sang, screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo, B. C. D. like some cat from Japan. He could lick 'em by smiling, he could leave them to hang.

Ziggy Stardust has a faint ring of The Man Who Sold the World to it - stately, measured, fuzzily electric. A tale of intragroup jealousies, it features some of Bowie’s more adventuresome imagery, some of which is really the nazz: So we bitched about his fans and should we crush his sweet hands? David Bowie’s supreme moment as a rock & roller is Suffragette City, a relentless, spirited Velvet Underground-styled rush of chomping guitars. David Bowie has pulled off his complex task with consummate style, with some great rock & roll (the Spiders are Mick Ronson on guitar and piano, Mick Woodmansey on drums and Trevor Bolder on bass; they’re good), with all the wit and passion required to give it sufficient dimension and with a deep sense of humanity that regularly emerges from behind.

Album Title Drop: "Ziggy Stardust" name-drops some words from the title, but never the entire title. Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Weird and Gilly and the Spiders from Mars. Alter-Ego Acting: Ziggy in relation to Bowie is a Type 3 example (alternate persona of the performer). Ambiguously Gay: Ziggy (with Bowie himself following suit!). Camp: Ziggy Stardust is the most famous example of this in David Bowie's work, intentionally evoked. Chronically Killed Actor: Ziggy is one of the many, many Bowie personae who dies. Climactic Music: "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide", beginning in the third verse when the horns enter. A Clockwork Orange was a key visual inspiration for Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and the term "droogie" is dropped in "Suffragette City". The starman in "Starman" is inspired by the Starchild in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The album was recorded at Trident Studios, London, 9 July 1971 - 4 February 1972 using material from the sessions for the previous album 'Hunky Dory' ('It Ain't Easy', July 9, 1971), all other tracks being recorded between November 8, 1971 and February 4, 1972. Includes printed lyric inner. Initial copies came with a single sheet insert promoting the current tour which started on 2 June 1972 running through until 25th June 1972. Front cover of this issue has derived from US artwork, and the RCA Victor logo and US catalogue number have been pasted over. It is possible to discern a large rectangular cover over, on which the UK details are placed on top of. Look for lines that break. Not to be confused with second issue cover, where JUST the catalogue number has been covered over and changed. First and second cat on cover and label, third on inner sleeve.

Like this? Try these. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture David Bowie. Why the hyperbole? Because the strength of Ziggy lies in its completeness. Not a track is out of place, in fact not a NOTE is out of place, and at just over 38 minutes it is (and this has been scientifically proven, boys and girls) the perfect length. Every R&B and Hip Hop artist in the universe take note. So, does it still stand up after 30 years? Is it a major strand in rock's rich tapestry, with its gender bending bravado and melodramatic sweep; or just an ephemeral piece of fluff about a bisexual pop star living through the apocalyptic countdown? With its so-called classic status.
