Hey, now my sight is failing in this twilight Da da da da da da da da da Now my death is more than just a sad song Da da da da da da da da da And I swear Woo hoo Yes I swear Woo hoo. I still don't remember how this happened I still don't get the wherefores and the whys I look for sense but I get next to nothing Hey boy welcome to reality. Ha ha ha ha Woo hoo. I've been right and I've been wrong Now I'm back where I started from Never looked over reality's shoulder. Here’s what Bowie had to say about the record: I feel that reality has become an abstract for so many people over the last 20 years.

David Bowie Is is filled with directions in his own hand, for everything from stage sets to live lighting designs to album covers, like his own ink-and-graphite sketch for Space Oddity. He hand-wrote his lyrics, too, neatly laying out the verses and choruses for Starman, Rock n’ Roll Suicide and Heroes. If I’m this character, in this space, aah, so I need a script, I need a story. Videos like Ashes to Ashes, in which Bowie wore the harlequin outfit by Natasha Korniloff, owned the medium, Mr. Reznor said, breaking down the expectation of what it meant to be in it. He said he watched the clip for Boys Keep Swinging, in which Bowie appeared dressed as women, walking a catwalk, countless times trying to discern Where is he coming from?

Bowie wrote 30 or so songs for the album, in wildly different styles, recording at Soho’s Magic Shop studio, around the corner from his apartment building. They’d lay down the basic tracks live, with Bowie playing some guitar. It was the beginning of what turned into a final flood of productivity. But Bowie still embedded enough intimations of mortality into his lyrics – and majesty in the music – that Blackstar seemed very much like a fitting goodbye. I think he thought if he was going to die, this would be a great way to go, says Visconti. This would be a great statement to make. Bowie was well aware that Lazarus, too, served that purpose, with its existential themes and its summational use of his entire catalog. But even as he engineered twin artistic departures for David Bowie, he was doing everything he could to stick around as David Jones.

David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its style and content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that he was later known for, such as the folk rock influenced "Space Oddity" or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Bowie had been battling cancer for six months when he entered Magic Shop’s expansive studio facilities in January 2015 to record his 25th album. The studio, which has also been used by Coldplay and Arcade Fire, was already known to him; he had recorded much of his previous album The Next Day there. But instead of rock musicians, he brought seven demos to progressive jazz saxophonist Donny McCaslin.

In the background Bowie sings of lawmen and cavemen, sailors fighting in dance halls, and I wish he were here now, in this kitchen with me, and I would hold his hand and together we would talk of life-on Mars, or otherwise.
