The mildly surprising part here is in the instrumentation; Keita seems to have reverted to the slightly slicker production sounds that he had gone away from for a couple of albums. He does make use of a couple of traditional instrumentalists in the outstanding choices of Toumani Diabate on kora and Keletigui Diabate on balafon. These musicians are, however, often overshadowed on this album by the combination of thumping guitars and bass. This is largely traditional music instrumentally, but the lyrics still deal with the age-old topics of love and love lost, the sad state of the modern world,.

Keita's new album, Papa - the first in a multi-album deal with Blue Note subsidiary Metro Blue - features both sessions recorded in Bamako and ones recorded in New York. The latter feature jazz musicians like organist John Medeski and drummer Ben Perowski. The latest album by Salif Keita, one of the great singers of Mali, is a revelation - particularly to me. Previously I had read of his stature in West Africa (see the Rough Guide to World Music), but hadn't caught up with the music itself. This album demonstrates that the best beats in the world come from Mali. I defy anyone listening to this disk to keep their feet from tapping, and their hips from twisting for longer than a few seconds. But the groove is not all there is on this immaculate album that hasn't been out of my player for days now.

Consumer Guide Album. Salif Keita: Papa This Vernon Reid coproduction is beyond fusion, crossover, world music, and the rest. The master guitarist is pure polyglot, comfortable anywhere from AOR to funk to harmolodic to aleatory, and after two decades of knocking on Euro-America's door, the master singer is at home in the white world even if he never found the fortune he sought there
