The Lutosławski Quartet has earned an international reputation for its performances of Polish music from the 20th and 21st centuries, exemplified by this first volume of Grażyna Bacewicz’s string quartets, considered some of the most significant contributions to the genre. The programme includes the folk infused First Quartet and the Third Quartet, a showcase for Bacewicz’s exceptional polyphonic skill, intense emotion and playful, high spirits.
A virtuoso violinist in her own right, Grazyna Bacewicz composed an impressive body of works for strings, which included her seven string quartets, composed between 1938 and 1965. This 2016 Chandos release by the Silesian Quartet presents these cogent works in transparent performances, and offers a comprehensive vision of Bacewicz's artistic development over three decades, from her early style, which was influenced by Béla Bartók's folk music explorations and Igor Stravinsky's neoclassicism, to her mature works, which bear her own individual stamp.

The powerful and intense String Quartet No. 5 is a compositional tour de force. Volume 1 can be heard on Naxos . 72806. Bacewicz had many talents: she was a fine pianist, a professional violinist in which capacity she recorded a number of LPs and a composer increasingly recognised. She wrote 7 quartets and each reflect elements of expressionism, neoclassicism, and serialism.
