Originally issued in 1983, African Head Charge's third album Drastic Season heralded a major change in their sound. The first of their LPs recorded at producer Adrian Sherwood's new Southern Studios, its use of state-of-the-art digital technology is startling, and although the group remains a primarily instrumental concern, the differences compared to previous records are vast.

Led by percussionist Bonjo I, African Head Charge formed in the early '80s and has released seven albums with a shifting lineup that also includes Prisoner, Crocodile, Junior Moses and Sunny Akpan. The band works in the same dub psychedelia territory as Adrian Sherwood's work, which isn't surprising since most of African Head Charge's albums have been released through - and produced by - Sherwood and his On-U Sound label.

Thirty-five years after African Head Charge's debut album, My Life in a Hole in the Ground, Adrian Sherwood's deconstruction of the music of Africa, Jamaica, and Great Britain might have finally found its proper decade and century. The first four albums, now reissued by Sherwood on his On-U Sound imprint, increased the vernacular of adventurous producers in the decades ahead.
