The Chocolate Watchband is an American garage rock band that formed in 1965 in Los Altos, California. The band went through several lineup changes during its existence. Combining psychedelic and garage rock components, their sound was marked by David Aguilar's lead vocals, songwriting, as well as proto-punk musical arrangements. The band's rebellious musical posture made them one of the harder-edged groups of the period with many critics labeling them as America's answer to the Rolling Stones.

The first official Chocolate Watchband anthology was a triumph of sorts, although it also has some flaws that are unusual for a Rhino Records release - the most obvious of which to real fans of the band is that it over-reaches. Purists may not care for the way the producers have freely mixed the recordings (mostly singles) featuring only the actual Watchband (. David Aguilar, Mark Loomis, Sean Tolby, Bill Flores, Gary Andrijasevich), album sides with extra, overdubbed instruments and redubbed vocals (by sessionman Don Bennett), and sides that (good though they are) were not the Watchband.

The original Chocolate Watchband was formed in the autumn of 1965 at Foothill College on the San Francisco peninsula, with a six-man line-up that featured guitarist Mark Loomis and drummer Gary Andrijasevich. Playing the R&B and folk rock of the day, the outfit did some recording, but outside of their unusual name, made little impression beyond local gigs in the San Jose area.
