Schütz: Weihnachts-Historie. This is a reissue of a 1989 recording by René Jacobs and his Concerto Vocale combining the Weihnachtshistorie with four Christmas-themed pieces from the Kleine geistliche Konzerte and one other motet in a Harmonia Mundi series devoted to Christmas music through the ages. This Weihnachtshistorie has acquired some competition from French and English ensembles in the intervening years, and the recording by the Ensemble Akademia under Françoise Lassere is worth considering. But the Jacobs version has held up very well.

Le Concerto Vocale was founded in Amsterdam in 1977 by the Belgian countertenor and conductor René Jacobs. This vocal ensemble counts in its ranks the sopranos Maria Cristina Kiehr and Martina Bovet, the contertenor Andreas Scholl, the tenors Gerd Türk and Matthias Widmaier (de), the baritones Martin Hummel (de) and Andreas Lebeda (de) and the basses Ulrich Messthaler and Franz-Josef Selig. It is complemented by an instrumental ensemble including, among others, Jean Tubéry, William Dongois (de) and a certain Gottfried Bach!
