House of Balloons is the debut mixtape by Canadian singer The Weeknd. Its music incorporates electronic and urban genres, including R&B and soul, along with trip hop, indie rock and dream pop tones. The contributions to the mixtape's production came from Canadian record producers such as Doc McKinney, Zodiac and Illangelo, among others.

House of Balloons is the first of three critically acclaimed mixtapes released for free download by The Weeknd, which was released on March 21, 2011. This 9 track project was released under XO and Island Records. House of Balloons, along with Thursday and Echoes of Silence, was later remastered as the Trilogy album in 2012, with one extra song on each tape. The bonus track for this mixtape was his twenty-eighth song, Twnty Eight.

Less than two months ago, few of us had ever heard of the Weeknd. Then, as soon as the creepy R&B tracks from this free mixtape began to circulate, the hype engine revved up. There was the Drake cosign, the album art that looked like Spiritualized crossed with Tumblr art-porn, the missing vowel, the stylish samples, and the project's creators hiding in the shadows. And this album happens to be very good. The work of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye and producers Doc McKinney and Illangelo (Drake producer Noah "40" Shebib, is not, as has been reported, involved in the project), House of Balloons is a remarkably confident, often troubling debut that excels at both forward-thinking genre-smearing and good old-fashioned songcraft. Take for starters the track "What You Need": with Burial-style vocal samples, techno scrape, and a sticky pop chorus, it's far from your average R&B number.

House of Balloons is the debut mixtape by Ethiopian-Canadian singer The Weeknd. In September 2013, The Weeknd revealed that the House of Balloons is a real place, located at 65 Spencer Ave in Toronto.

Throughout House of Balloons, Tesfaye croons in a silky smooth R&B voice that gives The-Dream a run for his money, and frankly, blows Frank Ocean out of the water. Out of nowhere, he has established himself as the newest, freshest voice on the scene, albeit with promotion assistance from Drake. Early rumors speculated that Drake’s main producer, Noah 40 Shebib, also produced The Weeknd, but the group has shot down those rumors. Still, no song on the album best exemplifies The Weeknd like What You Need. Illangelo and McKinney compose their most minimal track here, with only a basic minor synth progression and an almost too-simple beat. A robotic exhale precedes the snares, almost mocking R&B’s traditional use of the female exhale as a bludgeon that exclaims, Yes, I’m singing about sex!

The title track is based on the music of the hit single "Happy House" by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Upon its release, House of Balloons garnered much acclaim among critics and fans alike

Taken as mood music designed for toxic and illicit late-night situations, House of Balloons - the debut from Toronto vocalist Abel Tesfaye, released as a free download on his Tumblr blog - can make for absorptive listening. Joined by producers Doc McKinney and Illangelo, Zodiac, and Rainer, Tesfaye - to lift a phrase from David Toop - exemplifies the combination of "sugar and poison" that has powered R&B throughout its evolution
