Their newest release The Ninth Hour is set to be released in early October 2016. It goes without saying that my hopes for this album are very high. Opening in a conservative symphonic metal style, ‘Closer to an Animal’ unleashes epic choral and piano elements over well-toned distorted guitar lines. As we approach the half-way point of the album, it becomes clear what Sonata Arctica are trying to accomplish in this release; a well-composed collection of epic highs and calming lows, an album that seeks to explore every element that makes symphonic metal great, and – as of this point in the album – it accomplishes that with, for the most part, utter.

Musically, The Ninth Hour sits comfortably in SYMPHONY X/DREAM THEATER territory with some fleeting glimpses of the power metal of SONATA ARCTICA‘s Ecliptica and Silence albums. They've never quite been "100 percent power metal" in the same way bands like Stratovarius and Helloween were, they've never been as progressive as bands like Pain Of Salvation or Dream Theater

Once again, the album was produced by SONATA ARCTICA themselves and mixed by Pasi Kauppinen, to create a typical yet refreshing sound that defines the spirit of the band in the year 2016. The studio work for the new record started seriously in mid-April 2016 in several home studios around Finland," singer Tony Kakko explains. But the main recording and mixing took place at the Studio57 in Alaveteli, Finland. It functions as a kind of centre point and all work finally ends up there.
