Gentlemen was The Afghan Whigs' first major label release. Frontman Greg Dulli wrote it while touring after soundchecks and ‘after hours’ as a way to comfort himself during his depression. Spin Magazine described the album as a harrowing song cycle about the end of a toxic relationship. It reached on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart in April 1994 and spawned their biggest radio hit Debonair. What have the artists said about this album? The Afghan Whigs are an American rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Originally active from 1986 to 2001, they have since reformed. The group – with core members Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), and John Curley (bass) – rose up around the grunge movement, evolving from a garage band in the vein of the Replacements to incorporate more R&B and soul influences into their sound and image.

While Gentlemen is no monolith, it is very much of a piece at the start. The album truly comes into its own with "When We Two Parted," though, as sad countryish guitars chime over a slow crawling rhythm and Dulli's detailing of an exploding relationship. From there on in, things surge from strength to greater strength, sometimes due to the subtlest of touches - the string arrangement on "Fountain and Fairfax" or the unexpected, resigned lead vocal from Scrawl's Marcy Mays on "My Curse," for instance.
