There (as Martin Zero) he enabled the Buzzcocks’ Spiral Scratch to sound as out-of-control and spiteful as it does. The single Transmission on this set still has the power to shock with its intensity. Experimenting with unorthodox approaches and new technology allowed Hannett to create a sound that became much in demand
Simply for producing Joy Division, The Return of the Durutti Column and the first Buzzcocks EP, Martin Hannett (aka Martin Zero) deserves a special place in the pantheon. Clearly a troubled man, he famously told A Certain Ratio's guitarist to "play faster, but slower"
Martin Hannett was a record producer, and an original partner in Factory Records. He is perhaps most closely associated with Joy Division, as well as several other acts based out of the city of Manchester in the early 1980s. Hannett passed away at the age of 42 in 1991 from heart failure. Several weeks after his passing, Factory records issued a compilation Martin: The Work of Martin Hannett. And Here is the Young Man was also a compilation of Martin Hannett’s production work, issued a few years later in April of 1998.
Martin Hannett was very very important in thr first post-punk years. He indeed seems to have produced almost everybody of note. This item: Zero: A Martin Hannett Story 1977-1991. There's a problem loading this menu right now.
