A Broken Frame is the second studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 27 September 1982 by Mute Records. The album was written entirely by Martin Gore and was recorded after the departure of Vince Clarke, who had left to form Yazoo with singer Alison Moyet. Alan Wilder was part of a second band tour in the United Kingdom prior to the release of A Broken Frame, but had not officially joined yet and does not appear on the album.

A Broken Frame is the second studio album by the British group Depeche Mode, released in 1982. The album was written entirely by Martin Gore and recorded after the departure of Vince Clarke, who had left the band to form Yazoo with singer Alison Moyet. Alan Wilder was part of a second tour in the United Kingdom occurring prior to the release of this album, but he had not officially joined the band yet, and thus, does not appear on the album. The cover is a photograph, but is intended to resemble a painting.
But without a clear sense of direction their second album was a rather mixed effort. On their second album A Broken Frame, Martin Gore was forced into songwriting duties. The band felt it was very important to move on from Vince Clarke and prove they could carry on without him. Martin had some experience writing songs already, starting when he was around 16 and carrying on through the following years. When he took up songwriting duties in Depeche Mode, he already had a few songs he had written when he was younger but only had 5 or 6 months to produce 10 songs for A Broken Frame
