Release is the eighth studio album by the English synthpop duo Pet Shop Boys. It was first released in 2002. After the release of their previous studio album, Nightlife, it was originally planned that they would release a greatest hits collection in the autumn of 2000 with the two new tracks "Positive Role Model" and "Somebody Else's Business". While recording the new songs for the hits collection it was decided to produce a full studio album instead.

The Pet Shop Boys have never made a bad album, but with Nightlife, they started to seem a little worn out, as if they had explored their sound as far as it would go. But Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are among the smartest, pop-savvy groups to ever record, so they not only realized they were stagnating, they knew what to do about it, bringing Tennant's Electronic partner and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr for several songs, and moving the group toward careful, considered, mature pop for their eighth album, Release (another pun-worth title . It's hard to call Release an album of its time, since it hardly falls prey to trends, but it's aware of its time - an album that's proudly out of step with the particulars of hipness, but knows what they constitute, knows what they feel like, knows what modernism means for somebody who's lived their life with the.

For the Pet Shop Boys album, see Discography: The Complete Singles Collection. Pet Shop Boys discography. Pet Shop Boys live in Boston, 2006. The discography of the Pet Shop Boys, an English electronic/pop music duo, comprises 13 studio albums, four compilation albums, two live albums, four remix albums, one extended play and 55 singles. The duo's debut single, "West End Girls", was first released in 1984 but failed to chart in most regions. However, the song was entirely re-recorded in late 1985, and this newly recorded version became their first number-one single, topping the UK Singles Chart, Billboard Hot 100 and Canadian Singles Chart

The Pet Shop Boys eighth studio album Release, though not the rock album it was purported to be, does have enough guitar (courtesy of ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr) and percussion to create a sound that's as sumptuous as it is unexpected. It may raise a few snooty eyebrows among synth purists, but this twosome has never really been an electronic band in the purest sense. As they approached 50, the Pet Shop Boys contributed a solid, song-oriented album with one paltry dance track. The record is quite reminiscent of their now-ancient LP "Actually" - the focus is on pop songwriting without the techno-club dancebeats which they have raised to an art form. Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr becomes an honorary Pet Shop Boy, and in fact rather dominates the musical proceedings, his guitar-centered arrangements being the most noticeable characteristic of the record.

I don't agree with the previous reviewer that this is a boring album, neither is it a failure. I think this is probably (after "Very") the most cohesive PSB album. It's not one you want to play when you need happy music - it's relentlessly downbeat, and the final track, "You Choose", is crushing. At the time of its release this was also the best-sounding of PSB's albums - very clean-sounding, with spacious acoustic guitars and a very subtle electronic sheen. Their recent "Fundamental" album further refines this aesthetic, but continued improvements in mastering and production have certainly made the Pets sound better than ever. Ok, I don't play this album in its entirety very often (there's just too much other music to hear!), but at least half this album contains some very beautiful songs: "London", "E-mail", "Samurai", "Here", "You Choose". Give it a spin sometime on a good system.

"The Pet Shop Boys are not officially allowed to rock." once said Neil Tennant. "I don't like rock n roll." once said Chris Lowe in a song called "Paninaro". With this "Release", the Pet Shop Boys broke their words, exploring Pop Rock and leaving their Electronic roots on the side of the road. After the making of their musical "Closer To Heaven", it seems they got tired and this is the result: it all starts with "Home And Dry": horrible keyboards sounds, standard supermarket beats, and terrible video for the song where a camera follow a couple of rats in the London subway. The Beatlesque "I Get Along" is not bad in itself, but the video is an obvious attempt to redo "Being Boring". "Birthday Boy" and "Love Is A Catastrophe" are probably the weakest songs on this opus. Slow, painful, without any irony or subtility. What a incomfortable feeling when, while on tour, they perform this after a couple of uptempo classics. "E-Mail" and "Samuraï In Automn" are very good on the other hand. "E-Mail" uses a fat Hip Hop beat and a nice orchestra while "Samuraï" is a "Relentless" soundalike Techno track, expressing their thoughts after bitter critics during the "Nightlife" tour. The humor of "The Night I Fell In Love" falls flat after a few listen, and the naive melody is just annoying. "London"'s got some horrible vocoder used on Neil Tennant's voice. Very fashionable after it got over used by Cher and Kid Rock. In all, "Release" is a boring album and it is certainly one of the biggest failure in the Boys career. This 2XCD edition is interesting for the extras. The Electro Mix of "Home And Dry" sounds a lot more better than the original. "Sexy Northerner" should have been on the album and released as a single, but again it didn't happen. "Nightlife", co-produced by David Morales and dropped from the precedent album, is very well done too.
