The strengths of this album are the progressive, but radio friendly style, the great musicianship, the excellent lyrics and themes, and the abundance of terrific catchy Rush hits. Prior to Permanent Waves, Rush's trademark style involved sprawling twenty minute epics consisting of multiple distinct sections, avant-garde instrumentation, and a sound that, while great, would be considered too "stoner" for any radio appeal. On Permanent Waves, Rush enters the 80’s and the beginning of a new musical direction, compiling what is in essence a transition album between their sound of the 70’s and were they were going in the 80’s.
