Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK, and Sire Records in the United States. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket". Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders' first single, "Stop Your Sobbing", but decided not to work with them again as he thought the band was "not going anywhere".

The Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in Hereford, England, and Akron, Ohio, United States in March 1978. The original band consisted of initiator and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Honeyman-Scott (lead guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), Pete Farndon (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Martin Chambers (drums, backing vocals, percussion).

Talk of the Town" is a song written by Chrissie Hynde and performed by the Pretenders. Released first as a single and then on the Pretenders' 1981 EP Extended Play, it was later re-released on the band's 1981 album Pretenders II. Inspired by a London nightclub and a fan of the band, the song was a radio hit and reached number 8 in the United Kingdom. Talk of the Town" was inspired by a fan Chrissie Hynde had encountered on the band's first tour. I never spoke to him.

Essentially, this album is an unabashed sequel, offering more of the same sound, attitude, and swagger, including titles that seem like rips on their predecessors and another Ray Davies cover. This gives the record a bit too much of a pat feeling, especially since the band seems to have a lost a bit of momentum - they don't rock as hard, Chrissie Hynde's songwriting isn't as consistent, James Honeyman-Scott isn't as inventive or clever.

Date: Tue, 22 Oct 1996 14:37:52 -0400 (EDT) From: Len Moskowitz Subject: CRD: Talk of the Town (The Pretenders). Thanks to Clark Chang for the lyrics. The intro is a picked progression (an arpeggio) of the following two chords. The "h" means hammer o. G Csus2 (repeat 4 times). Common laborer by night, by day highbrow Back in my room, I wondered then I Sit on the bed, look at the sky, Up in the sky, clouds rearrange Like the talk of the town. G (use opening riff on G only) Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday. Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday.

Most importantly, songs like "Boots of Chinese Plastic" proved that the Pretenders could still rock. Elsewhere on the album, we also really loved the authentic blues feel of "Rosalee," which Hynde borrowed from her longtime Ohio-based musical peer Robert Kidney of the Numbers Band. From 'Learning to Crawl' (1984). If you only knew the early Pretenders material, it might not have seemed possible that they would one day write one of the season's most beloved Christmas songs. A longing feeling of unrequited love weaves through the lyrics of "Talk of the Town,' and if you believe the talk, Ray Davies of the Kinks was the object of Hynde's desires. She eventually got her man, of course. In fact, Davies and Hynde had a child together before going their separate ways.
