The French album Anthony Braxton (september 1969) sounded like an appendix to the trio's music, with Smith's ten-minute The Light On The Dalta and Jenkins' nine-minute Simple Like, but also included a new Braxton vision, the 20-minute Comp. 6G. The line-up consisted of the trio plus drummer Steve McCall. Live At The Rainbow Gallery '79 (september 1979) features the stellar line-up of Muhal Richard Abrams (piano), George Lewis (trombone), Dave Holland (bass) and Barry Altschul (drums). In the meantime the routine of avantgarde compositions resumed. Its companion was the four-disc set Solo Live At Gasthof Heidelberg Loppem (june 2005), containing Compositions 307-309 and a few covers. 4 Compositions - Phonomanie VIII (june 2005) contains the 35-minute Comp. 301 for solo piano, the 47-minute Comp.

Notes

Anthony Braxton live at the Rainbow Gallery, Minneapolis in September 1987.(?)

Having made his name as one of America’s most uncompromising and prolific jazz modernists, by the late 70s Chicago-born saxophonist-composer Anthony Braxton had long since abandoned attempts to categorize his work, preferring it simply to be termed ‘creative music’. Combining elements of minimalism, free jazz and modern classical with virtuoso technique and fiery intensity, he worked solo and with bands and orchestras throughout the 1970s.
This superb set was broadcast on KBEM-FM at the end of the decade, and is presented here with background notes and images.

The correct recording date may be 1976. In 1979 Braxton played with the quartet Braxton-Anderson-Lindberg-Barker

Please note that this is not a review, it's an attempt to correct some of the misconceptions communicated in the packaging of this release. It is quite obvious that this is an unofficial release; a release authorized by Braxton would not have nearly this many inaccuracies (although he has certainly struggled with labels on this point many times before). It's unlikely that the personnel on this release is as stated in the packaging. Whoever made this post (above), wrote "The correct recording date may be 1976. In 1979 Braxton played with the quartet Braxton-Anderson-Lindberg-Barker", assuming that the date was wrong rather than the personnel. I suspect it is the other way around--the date is correct, and the personnel is not. The drumming does not sound like Barry Altschul. I suspect that the rhythm section is John Lindberg (bass) and Thurman Barker (drums). Muhal Richard Abrams is definitely the likely choice for the pianist.Braxton was mostly using trombonist Ray Anderson during this period. It's entirely possible that perhaps Ray Anderson was otherwise booked, and Braxton managed to get George Lewis out for the show. The trombone playing certainly has evidence of Lewis' swagger. And Braxton and Lewis enjoyed playing Charlie Parker together (cf. their duo recordings, Elements of Surprise on Moers, on which they play 'Ornithology'; and Donaueschingen (Duo) 1976 on hatArt, on which they play 'Donna Lee'). Further, the titles are ludicrous for a Braxton date. Here is what is on the disc:Track 1: Cherokee (with a Charlie Parker solo played by the horns in unison) (Ray Noble/Charlie Parker)Track 2: Composition 23D (Anthony Braxton)Track 3: Composition 23E (Anthony Braxton)Track 4: Composition 40F (Anthony Braxton)The composed music is connected, in typical fashion, by free improvisation.
