Quartet (London) 1985. Live album by. Anthony Braxton. Bloomsbury Theatre, London, England.
This is the first of three sets of recordings issued by Leo records documenting a tour of Great Britain by Braxton 's classic quartet. The same tour formed the basis for Graham Lock 's fine analysis of the man and the music, Forces In Motion. The ensemble ( Marilyn Crispell on piano, Mark Dresser on bass, and Gerry Hemingway on percussion) was still less than a year old as a working unit, but already Braxton had clearly envisioned a new kind of structure with which to work.
Quartet (London) 1991 - 0. 3 set 1 Avant-Garde Jazz 2013. Quartet (London) 1991 - 0. 3 Avant-Garde Jazz 2013. Quartet (Salzburg) 1985 - 0. 9 Avant-Garde Jazz 2014. After the passing of the Coltrane/Dolphy generation, Braxton should have been next in line for jazz legend due to his abilities as both a composer and performer, but people were put off by his preppy collegiate appearance, and his oblique song titles and presentations that didn’t fit the mainstream or the ‘in crowd’ of the avant-garde either.
