Yvonne Loriod (20 January 1924 – 17 May 2010) was a French pianist, teacher, and composer, and the second wife of composer Olivier Messiaen. Her sister was the Ondes Martenot player Jeanne Loriod. Loriod was born in Houilles, Yvelines, France. She studied at the Paris Conservatoire and became one of Olivier Messiaen's most avid pupils. She also studied with Isidor Philipp, Lazare Lévy then Marcel Ciampi. At the age of 25, she was appointed professor at the Paris Conservatoire
Messiaen quickly saw in Yvonne Loriod somebody whose technique could interpret his music as he saw it. He dedicated "Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus", "Visions de l'Amen", "Catalogue d'Oiseaux", "La Fauvette des Jardins", "Petites esquisses d'oiseaux" and most of the piano parts in his orchestral works to her. Yvonne Loriod was also a composer, writing several works including "Grains de cendre" (1946) for Ondes Martenot, piano and voice; but the only one to be performed in public was probably "Trois Mélopées.
Messiaen wrote La morte du nombre for soprano, tenor, violin, and piano in 1929 while he was a student at the Paris Conservatory. It's typical of the style of the composer's organ works of the early '30s - harmonically and melodically rich, emotionally warm, and rhythmically irregular. The album closes with Chant des Déportés, for chorus and orchestra, written in celebration of the liberation of prisoners from concentration camps in 1945.
