The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is an English orchestra with a remit to serve the South and South West of England. Founded in 1893, the BSO has developed a reputation as one of the UK's major orchestras and has worked with many of the world's leading composers, conductors and performers. Originally based in Bournemouth, the BSO moved its offices to the adjacent town of Poole in 1979.
Vernon Handley's first professional engagement was in 1960, conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra . Handley recorded the symphonies of Elgar and Vaughan Williams for EMI. Handley also recorded many works by Sir Malcolm Arnold for Conifer Records, which were subsequently reissued in the UK by Decca Records. Elgar - Pomp and Circumstance Marches with London PO for CfP. Sibelius - Concert works for Violin: Two Pieces, O. 7, Serenades, O. 9, Six Humoresques, O. 7 with Ralph Holmes, Berlin Radio Orch (Koch-Schwann).
