Lungs is the debut studio album by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine. It was released on 3 July 2009 by Island Records. The album features production from James Ford, Paul Epworth, Stephen Mackey, Eg White and Charlie Hugall, with additional production by band member Isabella Summers.

Lungs was Florence + the Machine’s debut album. Largely recorded in a disused synagogue, it was produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford, who helped shape the Klaxons' sound, Steve Mackie (formerly of Pulp) and Paul Epworth, helmsman for Bloc Party and Kate Nash. Welch explained to Mojo magazine August 2009 the album title: I’ve done a lot of gigs where it’s just been me singing, and playing a drum. Drums are really important to me they’re like the heartbeat of music, and I think of the voice as the lungs

Even more once the deluxe version used the song’s full name.
While the comparisons were apt at the time, "Kiss with a Fist" turned out to be a red herring in the wake of the release of Lungs, one of the most musically mature and emotionally mesmerizing albums of 2009. With an arsenal of weaponry that included the daring musicality of Kate Bush, the fearless delivery of Sinéad O'Connor, and the dark, unhinged vulnerability of Fiona Apple, the London native crafted a debut that not only lived up to the machine-gun spray of buzz that heralded her arrival, but easily surpassed it.

Rarely does a band deserve the mainstream attention it receives, but Florence + the Machine have been able to reach massive audiences with their brand of music.
