Thank You for Today is the ninth studio album by American indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie. The album was released on August 17, 2018, on Atlantic Records. It is the first Death Cab for Cutie release to not feature Chris Walla since the band's first album, You Can Play These Songs with Chords.
Death Cab for Cutie is an American alternative rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. The band is composed of Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae. They have been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album for their most recent release, 2015’s Kintsugi. Their ninth album 'Thank You for Today' will be released later this year.
Thank You for Today is Death Cab for Cutie’s ninth studio release, and the first featuring an expanded line up. Dave Depper and Zac Rae (touring members during the Kintsugi tour) were added as full members to replace Chris Walla. Both bring in a fresh perspective as well as a brand more collaborative work dynamic. Thank You for Today opens with I Dreamt We Spoke Again, a dreamy ambient-pop track that sets the tone for the entire album: ethereal melodies paired with contemplative lyrics. This album is no Transatlantisism, but will more than likely be embraced by the self-proclaimed "early Death Cab fans and new fans alike.

Thank You for Today is a really nice album. The first time hearing it, a lot of the songs kind of sounded the same. But after subsequent listens, I've gotta say that I like every single song on this album. The album's opener "I Dreamt We Spoke Again" is really unique. Most DCFC album openers have an epic feel to them like "The New Year", "Marching Bands of Manhattan", "Bixby Canyon Bridge". I'm not sure if I'm ready to say that TYFT is Death Cab's best album. But this is a really solid release that's worth your time. 9 people found this helpful.
Thank You for Today’s closer 60 & Punk is halfway between a lament and a love letter, dedicated to a teenage hero of his who then became a friend and mentor in adulthood. He tactfully refuses to name names, but whoever the central figure is, Gibbard’s recently watched them contest a fierce battle with alcohol addiction. Death Cab for Cutie play six UK dates in January 2019.

Death Cab For Cutie do offer some sharp single-like material here that keeps the album from feeling overtly stagnant. Thank You For Today contains some of Death Cab For Cutie’s catchiest hooks and presents itself with beautiful production. But it’s also their most middle-of-the-road record to date. Fav Tracks: Gold Rush, Autumn Love, Northern Lights, When We Drive, Your Hurricane.
