Plans is the fifth studio album by Death Cab for Cutie, released on August 30, 2005. Drummer Jason McGerr noted the continuity between this album and their previous one, stating: if Transatlanticism was an inhale, Plans is the exhale. In 2006, a DVD was released titled Directions, an anthology of 11 short films all inspired by tracks of Plans.

In 2001, Death Cab for Cutie released their third album, The Photo Album The Photo. Death Cab for Cutie performed "Crooked Teeth" live on Saturday Night Live on January 14, 2006. Plans received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album of 2005, as well as achieving gold certification in 2006 after being featured on the Billboard Album chart for 47 consecutive weeks, and later was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
