ken isn't a nostalgic album. The album is murky and claustrophobic but still consistently melodic.
Ken (stylized in all lowercase) is the eleventh studio album from Destroyer, released on October 20, 2017 by Merge Records. Destroyer announced the album on August 8, 2017, including the release of the first song from the album, "Sky's Grey," by way of a lyric video posted to YouTube. The album's release date, track list, and artwork were announced the same day. The album was shortlisted for the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2019.
Destroyer is a Canadian rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia fronted by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar and formed in 1995. Destroyer songs are characterized by abstract, poetic lyrics and idiosyncratic vocals. The band's discography draws on a variety of musical influences, resulting in albums that can sound markedly distinct from one another; in Bejar's words, "That's kind of my goal: to start from scratch every time.
It makes sense, then, that ken, Destroyer’s first new release since 2015’s Poison Season, contains lessons, both musical and spiritual, about how history repeats itself-all the ways in which we are destined (or doomed) to fulfill old prophecies. Bejar named ken after the working title of Suede’s The Wild Ones, a tense and thrilling ballad first released in 1994 ( Oh, if you stay/We’ll be the wild ones, running with the dogs today, Brett Anderson sings). The Wild Ones is a sad and wistful song about wishing someone wasn’t about to leave you; on it, Anderson sounds both imploring and lost.
The album title is stylized consistently in all lower case. Destroyer (4). ken (LP, Album).
Released October 20, 2017. 1. Sky's Grey Lyrics. ken was produced by Black Mountain’s Josh Wells, who has drummed for Destroyer since 2012. The deluxe version of ken, includes a bonus 7 single with acoustic versions of 2 tracks. Producers Josh Wells. More Destroyer albums. Show all albums by Destroyer.
Destroyer, Ken ★★★★★ Download: In the Morning; Tinseltown Swimming In Blood; A Light Travels Down The Catwalk; Rome; La Regle Du Je. According to Dan Bejar, the title to Destroyer’s 12th, and possibly best, album came to him upon learning that it was the original name for the ballad The Wild Ones.
Returning with their 12th album, Destroyer (the brainchild of Dan Bejar) is back with new studio album ken, named for the working title of The Working Ones by Suede. But will a release named for another band’s work be something original or something lost to nostalgia? Formed in Canada in 1995, Destroyer’s first releases, all lo-fi and recorded to cassette, were branded as ‘gifted’ but almost as though Bejar has made a concerted effort to make the recording downright unconsumable.
