Dylan is an album compiled by Columbia Records consisting of outtakes by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on November 19, 1973. The tracks were assembled and issued by the label with no input from Dylan himself. The album followed the artist's departure from Columbia for Asylum Records, and the announcement of his first major tour since 1966

He thinks people overlook his 1980s work When asked which songs from his extensive catalog the public overlooks, Dylan named just two: 1980’s In the Garden and 1986’s Brownsville Girl. The former is a gospel tune from Saved, while the latter is an epic he wrote with playwright Sam Shepherd that appears on the otherwise dismal Knocked Out Loaded. These other bums are from down here. In the spring of 1970, anticipation for Bob Dylan‘s next album was through the roof. He hadn’t released a note of new music since Nashville Skyline 14 months earlier. Dylan’s journey to the first critical flop of his career started at Nashville’s Studio A in April 1969. Working with a band that included guitarist Charlie Daniels, bassist Charlie McCoy and drummer Kenny Buttrey, he cut standards like A Fool Such as I and I Forgot More Than You’ll Ever Know. Dylan didn’t explain the thought process behind all the covers (and still hasn’t), though his decision to record Ring of Fire and Folsom Prison Blues was clearly inspired by an appearance on The Johnny Cash Show that week. The Self Portrait sessions were extremely loose.

Prior to the appearance of this two-disc collection, Rolling Thunder's eclectic road show was chronicled only in the infrequently screened, Dylan-directed Renaldo & Clara film and the bafflingly brief and one-note 1976 live set, Hard Rain. In contrast to its predecessor, this set, culled from four appearances made in November and December of '75, captures the breadth and subtleties of Dylan's Rolling Thunder performances.

Commonly regarded as the worst album in Bob Dylan's catalog, Dylan is a collection of nine outtakes from the Self Portrait album Columbia assembled after the singer briefly jumped ship for David Geffen's fledgling Asylum Records. Dylan didn't want the record to be released, and it's easy to see why - the album is a collection of covers that are poorly performed on purpose
