Upon its release, the 1973 LP Brain Salad Surgery had been hailed as Emerson, Lake & Palmer's masterpiece. And even allowing how far the art and science of recording rock concerts had advanced in the 1970s, there were still inherent problems in recording a fully exposed bass - Greg Lake's primary instrument - in an arena setting that couldn't be overcome here.

Gregory Stuart Lake (10 November 1947 – 7 December 2016) was an English vocalist, songwriter, bassist, guitarist and producer. He gained prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock bands King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP).

Greg Lake and Carl Palmer were the strong counterparts Emerson needed to unfold his creativity and energy to full-scale. The band was unusual for its three-man structure, and the emphasis of keyboards over guitar. If ever there had been a lead guitarist added, it would have been none other than Jimi Hendrix, who expressed an interest in playing with the trio. The most well-known section is 1st Impression, Part 2 with the famous Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. lyric, which was later used as a title for a live album. The story of Karn Evil 9 tells of a futuristic world from which all manner of evil and decadence had been banished.

Greg Lake was born in Bournemouth, England on November 10th, 1947. He befriended eventual King Crimson leader Robert Fripp, who played guitar and lived nearby, and sought out opportunities to play music. Their live performances featured light shows and theatrics, including the parading of their Tarkus mascot, and their highest-charting album in the . was the live outing, Welcome Back, My Friends, to the Show That Never Ends – Ladies and Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The group recorded the album in Anaheim, California in 1974; its title referencing lyrics in the Brain Salad Surgery track Karn Evil 9. I think there is truth in the fact that the group was pretentious, he told Rolling Stone in 2013.

Welcome back, my friends To the show that never ends We're so glad you could attend Come inside! Come inside. Some of the songs at Rich Stadium were included in their "Welcome Back my Friends. You Turn Me On" (Lake) and "Lucky Man" (Lake). I know because if you listen carefully when Lake is tuning his guitar after "still. you turn me on" you can hear me yell "play, lucky man" and he begins playing (I'm sure just a coincidence). I was at about the 40 yard line, center. You can also view the video of this performance on some sites and Youtube
