The Rip Chords were an American singing duo originally called The Opposites, composed of Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas. This original twosome (Phil and Ernie) eventually expanded into four primary voices, adding Columbia producer, Terry Melcher and co-producer, Bruce Johnston. The group came to be associated with the hot rod/surf genre of the day, although their first single release, "Here I Stand," did not reflect that style. They recorded at Columbia Records in Hollywood from 1962-1965.
Hey Little Cobra & Other Hot Rod Hits, Three Window Coupe. The Rip Chords were originally Phil Stewart and Ernie Bringas, but by the time this album was recorded, producers Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher had pushed them aside and sang most of the Rip Chords songs themselves. Phil Stewart was allowed to sing lead on two songs on this album. Regardless of all that, this is a fun album that features the early-'60s California sound.
Soon, an album called "Hey Little Cobra And Other Hot Rod Hits" was recorded. The album featured the voices of Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston and Phil Stewart, with a host of session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew backing them. All personal appearances were by Phil, Rich and Arnie. Another car-orientated single, "Three Window Coupe", written by Roger Christian and Jan Berry of Jan And Dean, reached in the Summer of 1964 and was followed with an album of the same name, which also featured Melcher and Johnston on most of the tracks. As a live act, The Rip Chords put in an appearance singing "Red Hot Roadster" in a Rock 'n' Roll movie titled A Swingin' Summer, which also featured Gary Lewis And The Playboys, Donnie Brooks, The Righteous Brothers and Raquel Welch, making her movie debut. The band officially split up in late 1965.
The Rip Chords had one of the biggest hits of the surf era in the early 1960’s with Hey Little Cobra – maybe THE biggest outside of those by Jan & Dean and the Beach Boys – when it reached on the charts in early 1964 (back in the early days of Beatlemania). They don’t get a lot of respect though; since many people think that . wunderkinds Bruce Johnston and Terry Melcher – who also recorded as Bruce & Terry – bullied their way into the band, this led a lot of people to conclude that they were only a studio fiction. I had recently picked up the second album by the Rip Chords, Three Window Coupe, and it is every bit as good as their common first album, Hey Little Cobra and Other Hot Rod Hits.
