Back in the High Life is the fourth solo studio album by English rock musician Steve Winwood. Released in 1986, it was a top ten hit on the album charts in the United States, peaking at and has sold over five million copies. The single "Higher Love" topped the singles chart and won the Grammy Award for "Record of the Year"; "Back in the High Life Again" (US "The Finer Things" (US the second biggest hit from the album), and "Freedom Overspill" (US were also big hits.

His distinctive blue-eyed soul vocals are, naturally, at the front of the mix as well

Winwood played on a number of hits in the '60s and '70s as a session musician and as a member of Traffic, The Spencer Davis Group and Blind Faith. In the '80s, he established himself as a solo artist with songs he wrote with Will Jennings, who put lyrics to Winwood's music. The first album they worked on was Arc Of A Diver in 1981, followed by Talking Back To The Night in 1982 and finally Back In The High Life. Jennings told us: "We wrote those songs in the fall of '84, and it was a long spell before he got in the studio in New York.

Four years later Steve Winwood resurfaced with the mega-smash Back in the High Life. While not as warm sounding as his preceding solo albums, Back in the High Life was wildly more successful. Enlisting a who’s who of music, including Chaka Khan, James Taylor, Joe Walsh and Niles Rodgers, Back in the High Life sold millions of copies, spawned four hit singles and won a couple of Grammy Awards. The album was produced by Winwood and Russ Titelman, and an astonishing 17 assistant engineers. The best way to describe the sound is that it sounds sterile & clean. to the point of impotency. Between Winwood, Titelman, the 17 assistant engineers(!) and the bagillion musicians I think they incorporated every thing, and thought, imaginable to craft Back in the High Life. They may have even used a kitchen sink (drummer John Robinson is quite talented).
