Give Out But Don't Give Up is the fourth studio album by Scottish rock band Primal Scream. It was released on 28 March 1994 in the United Kingdom by Creation Records and in the United States by Sire Records. Musically, it marked a massive departure from the psychedelic sound of their previous studio album Screamadelica (1991) into one influenced by classic rock and blues music. Its cover photo is a cropped version of Troubled Waters by seminal American photographer William Eggleston.

I agree. I have always thought that this was their weakest album. It's challenging to get through this album from start to finish, whether listening to the original or remixed version. The Stones soul thing gets dull pretty fast. However, CD2 is better than CD one. Some of it is more stripped down and works better i.e the Free rehearsal. At least you can also hear Gillespie singing Free, which is a vast improvement. Allowing other people to sing his songs was a terrible decision. The backing soul singing is also quite hard to stomach. It's a good thing that they shifted gears after this and made the Vanishing Point, Xtrmntr and Evil Heat records. Now, that's a trilogy that further makes most of this one sound like middle of the road rock and roll.

This is all fine, and yes, obviously it's largely a big improvement on much of the original 1994 version of the album. However, it's still emphatically not an amazing album; the songs simply...aren't...that...great. It's Bobby and Company aping their Faces / Stones / 60s R&B and soul influences, bashful at getting to work with a handful of their musical heroes. But the songs, while charmingly sincere in their earnestness, are mostly slight on substance. There are pleasant riffs, good sounds, some catchy moments. But the songs themselves can't fit comfortably in the clothes they're being invited to wear. It's like a gawky, scrawny kid putting on an adult outfit. You can't make up for lack of substance in the songwriting department by blowing magic Memphis smoke on that outfit. It doesn't make it fit the group, it just makes it smell smoky. The type of historical revisionism exemplified by this release serves only to blow that magical Memphis smoke (and, obviously, cash) up the asses of everyone involved. Nostalgia f*cking sells. These type of "look, we have a lost album!" releases are now a pretty common thing from legacy acts in 2018. Why must nostalgia force bands to eventually trot out every unused studio take and dust it off, then treat it like it's a singularly beautiful blinding jewel? (And, even worse, expect us to be equally blinded?) It just isn't true, and serves only to erode the public's ability to decide on a realistic spectrum of artistic quality for all music and art. We're having a hard time telling what's good and what isn't these days, and I lay some of the blame on this sort of pillaging of the past for every scrap of value.GOBDGU was simply a retrogressive reaction to "Screamadelica." The group were highly drugged-up, worried that they'd be pigeonholed by the latter album's success, and they reacted against it by returning to their original mid-80s interest in rootsy, American-influenced garage rock and roll. It wasn't too far from what they were doing before the Weatherall-fueled rocket that was "Loaded," but, this time, they were granted the stamp of authenticity by dint of working with the Wrecking Crew, Memphis Horns, Dowd, et al. The overhauled / remixed version of the album they released in 1994 didn't do terribly well because the music-buying public didn't want that sort of thing (see also: Ride's "Carnival Of Light"), but the original Memphis mix would've done worse by far.(Side note: my favorite part of the 1-hour documentary on this album is when George Drakoulias says they gave him the three songs to mix/remix, and he said "I can either mix this straight and it'll be basically like a radio mix of just what you gave me, or I can go crazy and make it stupid, and they said 'yes, make it stupid'...so I did." Hahahahaha. No wonder the tracks he remixed sound more like Bobby fronting The Black Crowes.)Not everything is worth it. This release is a cool curio, and I'm happy to have heard it. I like it....but it ain't some great lost gem.

I like the Faces, but I definitely preferred the Small Faces, personally.

The Faces were a massive influence on bands, London Choirboys around 1989 (they even had Steve Marriott's drummer),& the of course Black Crowes & Primal Scream, there is another "also ran" UK 1990 psych band that did that sound for a bit.Sadly many fans of these bands probably didn't find out about how great the Faces were.
