Colonel Robert Stuart Macrae TD was an inventor best known for his work at MD1 during the Second World War, his best known invention being the sticky bomb. Macrae was the author of Winston Churchill's Toyshop, a memoir detailing his experiences at MD1. Macrae had been a trainee engineer and late in the First World War worked on a device for dropping grenades as an early form of cluster bomb. The war ended before the device was used or he received any commission for his work.
It has been a busy summer for 25-year-old Stuart MacRae. Hot on the heels of the Proms premiere of his Violin Concerto, his playful new wind quintet, Joindre, was premiered at the international festival. It was vividly performed by James Macmillan and members of the Britten Sinfonia. Instead of trying to make the instruments gel with one another, Joindre insists upon the distinctive timbres of each player. The instruments try to create melodies by passing single pitches to one another, but the music collapses into disagreement.
The Clan Macrae is a Highland Scottish clan. The clan has no chief; it is therefore considered an armigerous clan. The surname Macrae (and its variations) is an anglicisation of the patronymic from the Gaelic personal name MacRaith. This personal name means "son of grace". The name is recorded numerous times in the Middle Ages, and was used by various unrelated families.
CD 1. Stuart MacRae Composer. 2 Scenes from the Death of Count Ugolino, for voice and orchestra Work. Scene One: sostenuto. 6. Scene Two: energico. Motus, for violin, cello, clarinet, oboe, piano and harp Work.
Scottish composer Stuart MacRae wrote the four works collected on this CD while in his twenties. The diversely scored pieces are strongly influenced by the aesthetics of European modernism and most tend to be angst-ridden or prone to frenzy. They demonstrate great technical proficiency and are successfully evocative, but, except for certain recurring gestures, such as the very effective use of hammered repeated notes and chords, these pieces fail to reveal a uniquely distinctive voice.
