New Wave music meant a lot of things in the late 1970s. It encompassed pretty much everything that followed the punk movement that still served as an alternative to mainstream pop and rock. There was power-pop, neo-psychedelia, acid-punk, art rock and lots and lots of keyboards. One of the first misconceptions to fall by the wayside will be the notion that new wave/punk rock is raw, offensive, noncommercial music, wrote Greg Shaw in a 1978 issue of Billboard. In fact, it’s now widely recognized that the new wave represents a full spectrum of musical styles with the common factor being a fresh, honest approach and a sense of cultural involvement between artists and audience. Shaw also noted that artist-owned labels, once meaningful only as demos or vanities are now commercially viable thanks to new wave marketing systems.

In tandem with his 'Never Mind The Punk 45' Punk Art record sleeves and using original artwork imagesalong with artefacts from his own personal punk rock collection, this is one in a series of exclusive and unique prints. The vocal track & some instrumental parts of The Cure track are differentand it predates the album version with a production that is rougher and more basic. The sleeve dates the song from 1978 and states 'Eighteen Age Records' instead of 'Fiction' and it is rumoured that this version was incorrectly included byPolydor.

On this date in 1979, TUBEWAY ARMY were on Top Of The Pops performing their number one single ARE ‘FRIENDS’ ELECTRIC? (Juen 28th, 1979). Tubeway Army were a punk band intent on getting a contract. Beggar's Banquet, a small independent label begun as the recording arm of a London record store, took them on. After a couple of 45s ('That's Too Bad’ and 'Bombers') the company told them to make an album. In summer 1979, 'Are 'Friends' Electric?', the second single from the album, went to number one in the British charts. Replicas soon copped the top spot in the LP charts as well. I couldn't believe how much of an anticlimax it was when got to number one. When it got to number two it was such a dream come true that I wouldn't let myself believe it'd go to number one, so that I wouldn't be disappointed if it didn't.

Post-punk was punk’s moody, arty cousin, raised on Can and Fela Kuti rather than Chuck Berry, and concerned with the inevitable destruction of the Cold War. But it sure could dance. With this list, Treble attempts to document 100 of the best albums that post-punk ever produced. In the immediate aftermath of Bauhaus, members of the legendary goth-rock band splintered off into various new projects: Dali’s Car, Peter Murphy’s solo recordings and, of course, Love and Rockets. Short lived as it was, Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins’ Tones on Tail proved one of the most wildly creative, their debut album, the perhaps ironically titled POP, featuring a wide range of arty experimental sounds including the haunted synth-pop of Lions, the slap-bass agit-funk of War and the sexy dancefloor vamp Performance.

The world may be full to the brim of new wave and punk compilations, but it’s still possible to find freshness in the hoary old archives of gobland, as DJ Gary Crowley proves with this unambiguously-named collection. Despite a sleeve displaying an anachronistic ghetto-blaster, this is a set that could only have been compiled by someone who was there at the time
