Small Town is a live album by Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan recorded at the Village Vanguard in 2016 and released on the ECM label the following year. It was Frisell's first album for the label since 1987's Lookout for Hope.

A small town Southern man is a special kind of man. Alan Jackson knew that when he released "Small Town Southern Man" in 2007 as the first single from his album Good Time. The song is essentially the life story of a noble man who cares about his family, his faith and his country from his youth until his old age. It’s got a classic country feel, which fits well with the storytelling style. The song was a No. 1 hit for Jackson - his first since 2004 - and serves as a tribute to small town Southern men everywhere. 8. "Thank God for Hometowns".

Small Town presents guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan in a program of duets, the poetic chemistry of their playing captured live at New York s hallowed Village Vanguard. Frisell made his debut as a leader for ECM in 1983 with the similarly intimate In Line. The guitarist's rich history with the label also includes multiple recordings by his iconic cooperative trio with Paul Motian and Joe Lovano, culminating in Time and Time Again in 2007.

Small Town Pistols are keeping it in the family and that’s a very good thing. It’s hands down one of the top five best country singles of the past twelve months. I’ll be the blue in your skies just to show you the world’s not black and white, and love’s not colour blind. From then on, Small Town Pistols continues to cover colourful ground. Broken hearts, the call of freedom and the turmoil of change all inform what’s found on this collection.

Before Small Town, guitarist Bill Frisell hadn't led an ECM date since 1988's Lookout for Hope. He started hinting at a return to the label in the early 2010s. He was part of Stefano Bollani's trio on the lovely Joy in Spite of Everything in 2014, and in Andrew Cyrille's quartet on 2016's The Declaration of Musical Independence. Frisell formed a duo with bassist and collaborator Thomas Morgan for the live date Small Town, recorded at the Village Vanguard. They last worked together on record for Paul Motian's The Windmills of Your Mind in 2011
