From the Beginning is the first compilation album by the English rock band Small Faces. It was released by Decca Records of group material after the band had left the record label; it consisted of the band's Decca hit singles combined with various unreleased recordings. The album rose to Number 17 in the UK Album Chart. The album was released by Don Arden on Decca after the group had made a switch to the Immediate label headed by Andrew Loog Oldham.
The Small Faces split from manager Don Arden to sign with Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label and, in retaliation, Decca and Arden rounded up the remaining recordings the group made for the label and released them as From the Beginning. And From the Beginning really doesn't play as a cohesive album by any stretch of the imagination, as it opens with a burst of burgeoning psychedelia then doubles back to the group's early R&B, flaws that matter less as years pass by because, on a track by track basis, there is a lot of wondrous material here.

Small Faces were an English rock band from East London. The group was founded in 1965 by members Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones, and Jimmy Winston, although by 1966 Winston was replaced by Ian McLagan as the band's keyboardist. The band is remembered as one of the most acclaimed and influential mod groups of the 1960s with memorable hit songs such as "Itchycoo Park", "Lazy Sunday", "All or Nothing", and "Tin Soldier", as well as their concept album Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake.

On Small Faces’ ‘I’m Only Dreaming’, which plays with soft/loud dynamics to great effect before finishing with a flourish of sax and soul shouting, the band put the two styles together. Overall, a slightly fuller, cleaner sound and the inclusion of ‘Itchycoo Park’, the band’s most memorable composition, makes Immediate’s Small Faces the slightly stronger album, but each is thoroughly enjoyable and totally of a piece with the other. The album plays like a response to Sgt. Pepper’s revolutionary sound. The tone is set from the beginning with a spacey instrumental opener, while the music hall-influenced ‘Rene’ and ‘Lazy Sunday’ sit comfortably next to the hard rocking ‘Afterglow of Your Love’ and ‘Song of a Baker’. The b-side is loosely based around the fantastical story of a boy named Happiness Stan, who sets out to find the missing half of the moon, on an Alice in Wonderland-like psychedelic trip.
The Small Faces started out all swagger and machismo, but over the course of the 15 months documented here, they entered a new, LSD-fuelled universe – and it suited them. But From the Beginning inadvertently told the story of British pop in the mid-60s in microcosm. Over the course of its 14 tracks, you can hear a seismic shift in focus: from lightweight pop designed to wring some quick cash out of what some people still thought was a passing fad and attempts to mimic US R&B, to an LSD-fuelled musical universe in which you could sing with impunity about listening to the flowers breathing. It was a journey undertaken at white-knuckle speed. Everything on From the Beginning – in fact, everything on The Decca Years – was recorded in the space of 15 months
