Blues Dream is the 13th album by Bill Frisell to be released on the Elektra Nonesuch label. It was released in 2001 and features performances by Frisell, Greg Leisz, Ron Miles, Billy Drewes, Curtis Fowlkes, David Piltch and Kenny Wollesen.

Guitarist Frisell's previous couple of recordings found him in something of a mellow, acoustic-oriented vein. Although these were nice recordings, it is nice to be able to report that Frisell has cranked up the energy a couple of notches on Blues Dream, which features Frisell on both acoustic and electric guitars. The rest of the group comprises Greg Leisz on various steel guitars and mandolin, Ron Miles on trumpet, Billy Drewes on alto sax, David Piltch on drums, Kenny Wollesen on drums, and Curtis Fowlkes on trombone

Bill Frisell - Blues Dream. Artist: Bill Frisell. Album: Blues Dream, 2001. from the "Blues Dream" 2001. This openness remains throughout the album, even when alto and trombone are added into the mix. The instrumental "Ron Carter" begins with the loose, electrified feel of an early Miles Davis fusion piece, with Bill Frisell's distorted guitar exploring the space of the piece without resorting to excessive volume. The arrangements on Blues Dream are a big change from last year's solo effort, Ghost Town.

Blues Dream moves from beautiful to strange and back again. It’s no surprise that this album is a kind of soundtrack, as the title track was commissioned for the play Temporary Help in the late 1990s. The whole group of 17 different compositions was then commissioned by the Minneapolis Walker Arts Center, where the play had premiered. Frisell then performed Blues Dream at the Walker for the first time in 1999. It is, by genesis and mood, theatrical: the sound of a journey. Of course, Bill Frisell’s distinctive electric (and, here, acoustic) guitars are the star of the travelogue, creating a wide spectrum of colors and textures that generate a landscape of sound. Frisell tears off blues runs, say, on the simple one-chord groove of Ron Carter (a tune anchored by a simple three-note lick played by bassist David Piltch), ripping like a Hendrix acolyte.

Frisell's fondness for putting unusual combinations of instruments together adds to the overall effect, leaving the listener to wonder why no one has ever tried this before. Blues Dream is a lovely release that should satisfy Frisell fans as well as jazz, country, and blues fans looking for a genre-bending experience. All compositions by Bill Frisell.
