1. Irkanda IV. Arranged By – Peter Sculthorpe. Arranged By – David Matthews (9). 6:36. String Quartet No 6. (15:33).

Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, who was brought onto the international radar by the Kronos Quartet some years ago, wrote 18 string quartets. The earlier ones were influenced by Indonesian and other southeast Asian music, but over time he delved deeper into Australian aboriginal traditions.

Peter Sculthorpe celebrated his 80th birthday in April, and this recording of his four most recent numbered string quartets was released to mark the occasion. He has been the leading Australian composer of his generation; his works manage to evoke his country's extraordinary landscapes while never shrinking from its social issues. So the 14th Quartet is subtitled Quamby, and evokes not only the Tasmania in which Sculthorpe grew up, but also its brutal colonial past: it identifies a place where Aborigines were massacred.

The string quartet was central to Peter Sculthorpe’s output. His last, No 18, had its premiere on his 81st birthday. He undoubtedly liked string instruments because of their ability to sustain long-held notes. The American Del Sol Quartet’s obvious understanding of this ultra-Australian music, their fine textural blending and depth of tone all contribute to the success of these performances. Stephen Kent is an Englishman who became interested in the didjeridu while working as musical director for Circus Oz. His choices complement the quartet’s work beautifully, and do not feel intrusive in the slightest. Moreover, the recording quality is among the best I have heard on a new quartet release for some time. A blu-ray disc accompanies the CDs, plus extensive and informative notes by Graeme Skinner.

Sculthorpe String Quartets, Vol 2. String Quartet No. 10. 11, 'Jaribu Dreaming'. A rewarding anthology spanning some four decades and more, from the Tenth and Eleventh Quartets of 1983 and 1990 (both written for the Kronos) all the way back to Sculthorpe's own reconstructions of individual movements from his first four quartets (teenage efforts, none of which have survived intact). The stunning Earth Cry (1986) sounds even more effective in its original orchestral guise (11/95), but there's no gainsaying the vibrant commitment and superior polish displayed by the Goldner Quartet. Truthful sound and balance.
