Workingman's Dead is the fourth Grateful Dead studio album. It was recorded in February 1970 and originally released on June 14, 1970. The album and its studio follow-up, American Beauty, were recorded back-to-back using a similar style, eschewing the psychedelic experimentation of previous albums in favor of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's Americana-styled songcraft. In 2003, the album was ranked number 262 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Grateful Dead’s fourth studio album, Workingman’s Dead, was released in the summer of 1970 and has a country and folk rock Americana sound courtesy of the production from the group and songwriting of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. The style was influenced in part by the sounds of Crosby, Stills & Nash, as well as the Bakersfield sound. The album was reissued with live versions of five album cuts, along with an alternate mix of New Speedway.
In 1965, five uniquely talented artists from a variety of musical backgrounds came together to form a new kind of band. Guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan all served stints in various Bay Area rock and R&B outfits; Jerry Garcia played guitar and banjo in a jug band and bassist Phil Lesh was a composer of electronic music.

The Grateful Dead is the debut album of the Grateful Dead. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in March 1967. According to the biographies of both bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the band released the album as San Francisco's Grateful Dead. The album was primarily recorded at RCA's Studio A, in Los Angeles, in only four days. The band had wanted to record the tracks in their hometown of San Francisco, but no recording studios in the area had modernized equipment at the time.
