Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles presents his expressive new album ‘Persona’, set for release on 13th April 2018 via Erased Tapes. This powerful image struck Ryan and it inspired the album’s main theme - an exploration of the persona, the difference between how we see ourselves and how others see us, the spaces in between; between states, people, light and dark, the inner persona and the outer persona. My music is generally inward looking.

Persona is uneasy listening, with heavier rhythms and more fragmented melodies than West deployed on previous works like Howl and Night Melody, yet it’s equally engrossing. It leaves a deep psychic impression-a truly arthouse album that begs repeated revisiting, to explore its many conflicting faces.

Rival Consoles' album Persona, inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film of the same name, aims to explore the difference between personal perceptions of the self and how one is viewed by others. Significantly less danceable than some of the artist's other albums, the album simultaneously feels more introverted and more expansive. Ryan Lee West's tracks blend acoustic and electronic instrumentation as well as a plethora of effects, with crisp snare drums galloping alongside wavy synth chords which vividly ebb and flow, and melodies which sound live rather than programmed.

The true wonder of this album is that you learn everything that you need to know about the following 12 tracks in the first minute of the first song – there will be tension, there will be unexpected lift, and there will be a constant and steady percussive force that carries you through every moment. Now that is a revealingly impressive 60 seconds; equally fitting that the first track on the album is entitled Unfolding.
